Mana Pools, part of a 10,500 square kilometre Parks and Wildlife Estate, derrives its name from the local Shona word ‘mana’, meaning ‘four’, referring to four large Pools on the Zambezi River – once a major route for ivory and slave trading in Africa’s dak past – at a point in the River where it flows sedately on its way to the Indian Ocean. The Pools are remnant ox-bow lakes, carved over hundreds of years as the Zambezi has changed its course.

The Pools are situated on a rich alluvial flood plain, an unusual ecosystme, supporting abundant wildlife.
